Charlie refilled the large mixing bowl with popcorn and returned to the living room.

“He thought you poured gas into a charcoal grill? What a dumbass. I’m happy you ran him out,” Bev said, taking a handful of popcorn and shoving it into her mouth.

“Seeing him at work has super sucked,” Charlie said. “I don’t know what I was thinking letting him come over to begin with.”

Bev finished chewing and followed up her popcorn with a drink of margarita. “Sounds to me like he invited himself. Typical douchebag behavior.”

Charlie laughed and stuck a piece of popcorn in her mouth. “Pretty much. I guess that’s one good thing about the ghost. I’ve been so busy worrying my house is haunted, I haven’t had time to feel completely mortified about what happened with Warren.”

“I’d like to know where the damn ghost was when Warren was acting like an asshat. You hear me, ghost? If you’re going to live here rent-free, the least you can do is cause the wanker’s hair to turn white when he walks in the door.”

“I’m pretty sure he dyes his hair, so it’d be a moot point,” Charlie said.

“You know what sounds good all of a sudden? Peanuts! Have any peanuts?”

Charlie laughed and called out to Bev as she disappeared into the kitchen. “In the cupboard above the stove.”

Bev stepped into the doorway a moment later, holding up a gray cashmere sweater. “Have you started keeping clothes in the kitchen cupboards?”

Charlie frowned and stood. “No way. I’ve been searching everywhere for that sweater.”

Bev handed it to her.

Charlie stared at it and tried to remember unpacking it, but she’d been so busy the first few days in the house, it was impossible to remember when she’d unpacked the sweater. She laid the sweater over a chair.
